Life Sketch

Dr. Melkote Embar Rangachar, is a reputed scholar both in Sanskrit Literature and Philosophy honoured with President of India award.

Born in year 1935 in the lineage of Sri Embar (Nephew and Sishya of Sri Bhagavad Ramanujacharya), he hails from Melkote (Karnataka) which is sanctified by the long stay of Sri Bhagavad Ramanujacharya and of Sri Vedanta Desikar, the two stalwarts of Indian Philosophy, particularly of Sri Visishtadvaita Siddantha (qualified Monism).

Dr. Rangachar imbibed his scholarship and initial learning directly from his father Tharka Dharma Sastra Vidwan, Asthana Vidwan Sri U. Ve. Embar Narasimhacharya Swamy. Sri Narasimhacharya Swamy (1896-1981) was a well respected Vidwan and had many recognitions from all the mutts, learning at his feet Veda-Vedanta and Nyaya-Vaisesika.

Later he studied philosophy in depth - both western and eastern as student of Mysore University and obtained M.A. Degree with Distinction. He obtained PostGraduate degree in Sanskrit also. He secured Vidvat degree in Nyaya and Vedanta from Maharaja Sanskrit College, Mysore. As a further distinction, he secured Ph.D. from Bombay University for his thesis titled "The Philosophy of Visistadvaita".

He has put in thirty years of fruitful service as head of the Department of Sanskrit in Desiya Vidyasala Senior College, Shimoga and also served as Guest lecturer in Post Graduate classes of Kuvempu University.

He is an Orator of eminence, engaged in traditional Kalashepams and Upanyasams on Sri Vedanta Desika's works, philosophic discourses in Ramakrishna Math, Bangalore, Shankara Krupa, Indian Institute of World Culture etc. He has also addressed several universities in USA.

He has been honored by several sages and religious pontiffs namely H.H. Jeeyar of Mysore Parakala Mutt, H.H. Andavan Ashramam, H.H. Sankaracharya of Sringeri Sharada Peetham, H.H. Sri Vishvesha Tirtha Swamiji of Pejavara Mutt and Swami Chinmayanandaji. He received Honarary Doctorate in Literature in 2014.

He had his Samasrayanam performed to him by his Father and Bharanyasam under the lotus feet of Srimad 'Thirukundanthai' Vedantha Ramanuja Maha Desikan of Srirangam Andavan Ashramam.

He currently resides in Bangalore (near Srimath Andavan Ashramam Sri Andal Rangamannar Devasthanam, Jayanagar II block).
